About 5 years ago, BMW decided to redesign the double-door 3 Series. Then, it renamed the 4 Series. The latest 2019 BMW 4 Series continues the legacy of delivering a power-packed performance along with poised, refined riding experience.

The 2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible is available in two trims, the 4-cylinder turbocharged 430i, and the 6-cylinder super performer 440i. There are some additional packages available to enhance the look and feel of either of the 2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible trims.
The convenience package adds blind-spot monitoring and heated seats among other features. Equipping the BMW 4 Series Convertible with the Driving Assistance package brings the forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and low-speed automatic emergency braking to the table.
In addition to the optional upgrades, the 430i trim comes with a galore of standard features. It features 18-inch wheels, auto-dimming mirrors, automatic LED headlights, emergency notification, heated side mirrors, roadside assistance services, and selectable drive modes.
Several of the upgrade options available to the 2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible 430i are available as standard features on the 440i trim. This includes the 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with satellite radio, keyless ignition, and upgraded steering wheel leather.
Driving and Performance
While the 2019 release of the BMW 4 Series Convertible 430i comes with the 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the 440i packs a 3.0L turbocharged 6-cylinder engine. The 2.0L engine produces 248 hp of power and 258 lb.-ft. of torque.
The more powerful 3.0L engine generates 326 hp of power along with 332 lb.-ft of torque. For gear-shifting, 2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible features the 8-speed automatic transmission. It can be paired either with the standard RWD or the optional xDrive all-wheel-drive system.
As a cruiser, the 2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible excels. The acceleration is acceptable with the 2.0L engine and better with the 3.0L engine. Although there’s a slight lag with the former. The ride hits the 60 MPH mark in 6.9 seconds. Braking is effective and powerful at all speeds.
The steering is acceptable in the Comfort Mode but becomes heavy in the Sports Mode. 2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible has a good handling balance and offers a poised, comfortable ride in all normal driving conditions. The gear shifting is exceptional, especially in the Comfort Mode.
Interior & Infotainment
The front space is airy with the rear seats suffering a little low on legroom. Although the cabin looks posh and up-to-date, a lack of tech features and the inclusion of some cheap-looking pieces retracts from achieving perfection. The power top takes 22 seconds for folding down completely.
The 2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible is a convertible with only a few compromises. While the driving position is spot-on, the level of access and visibility offered by the convertible variant matches with that offered by the coupe version of the BMW 4 Series.
2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible comes with an 8.8-inch iDrive infotainment system that offers crisp graphics and a simple-to-use interface. While the standard audio system is good, the optional 16-speaker Harmon Kardon system takes the sound to a whole new level.
An aspect in which the 2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible lags is the storage capacity. Although the partitioned trunk has acceptable space for items, the overall capacity is less than what it should be. Also, the storage for small items is also limited.
Unfortunately, safety for 2019 BMW 4 Series Convertible is only acceptable. Features such as blind spot monitoring and lane departure warning that should be available as standard safety features are only available as options.
Available safety features include brake assist, DRLs, and rollover protection system. Latches are available for child safety. While the lower LATCH points are present under the plastic lids of both back seats, upper tether points are absent.
