All you should know about specific vision anomalies among men

With age, a human body undergoes several changes in the body chemistry including physical, psychological and hormonal imbalance. All can adversely affect the eyesight due to many different reasons especially insufficient hormone levels that are often considered underlying cause. Chemicals in the body are responsible for effective functioning of our organs and senses including eyes. How all this contributes to particular vision anomalies among men?

Hormonal variations

Both men and women experience significant change in their body chemistry as they transcend from childhood into adulthood. Males on the contrary experience rapid physical growth with lengthened eyeballs during the period which eventually distorts the shape, developing myopia which is also referred to as near-sightedness. Though the onset may last for a short period in men, teenagers may experience permanent variation that goes all the way to adulthood.

Hormonal and chemical changes in the body may result in reduction of the eyesight, compromising quality vision which is often linked to middle-age men in their 30s and 40s. This is also a result of reducing testosterone levels which triggers certain changes in overall body composition including eyes.

Vision changes & health conditions

In general ophthalmology, you would learn of vision-related symptoms in men that shouldn’t be ignored because they might indicate to a more serious health anomaly. While vision is susceptible to natural deterioration with age, onset takes its toll during middle age. Problems such as tunnelled vision, halos, blind spots, blurry vision and other such may indicate a serious vision condition.

These symptoms can be due to diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, macular and retinal degeneration and cataracts. Further indication can be of imminent cardiac arrest, stroke, migraine and brain tumour. Any such symptoms, if experienced, require immediate medical consultation.

Occurrence of accidents

With vision, men are more vulnerable to accidents that can directly impact on the vision. It’s thus crucial of them to wear protective eye gear but only that recommended by the doctor. This is more important for those engaged actively in sports raising the risk of contact-based injury.

Occurrence of presbyopia is common among middle-aged men which compromises close-up vision. Focused object must be held close to the eye whereas testing of the vision must be performed after removing any prescribed eyewear for proper diagnosis. Normal ageing is associated to these inconsistent changes which makes the eye lens weaker and reduces its elasticity.

Early detection

Only an expert eye doctor can early detect any onset during screening session and offer timely treatment to avoid devastating vision outcomes in later stages of life. It’s thus important to consult a doctor frequently or whenever experiencing any distortion in the vision. For healthy men, preferred eye health check-up essentials are;

  • Between the age of six and 40 years after every three years
  • Between the age of 40 and 65 with visits after every two years

Glaucoma screening

Glaucoma screening session among healthy men is recommended from the age of 40 years onwards. But, those having a family history of such condition may require early screening. Glaucoma is usually unhealthy pressure in the optic nerve of the eye which, if left untreated may result in permanent blindness.

In ophthalmology, there aren’t any detours to a healthy vision which means everyone should be proactive and responsible.
