How Destructive Testing Of Concrete Is Different From Non-Destructive Testing?

When experts perform destructive test on concrete sample in the lab, they need to avail certain information about concrete in the actual structure. Test samples do not always provide true information of the concrete due to many reasons.

NDT or non-destructive test are simple to perform and doesn’t need extra labor time and raw materials.

It is a ubiquitous material as its constituents are cheaper and easily available. Moreover, concrete in its fresh state can be molded into any desired size and shape. Its strength and durability make the concrete robust material.

This is why it is important to ascertain the compressive strength of concrete prior using it. Compressive strength of the solid concrete can be determined with destructive and non-destructive testing methods.

The destructive testing method is performed by crushing the cast specimen to failure. The non-destructive testing method is performed without breaking the concrete specimen. The major disadvantage of destructive testing method is the time it consumes for delivering the results.

NDT tests are also known as situ tests that may cause minor damage to the structure, but don’t affect their performance and appearance.

Nondestructive tests can be classified into two sections:
1.Test that assesses the strength in situ
2.Test that determines major characteristics of concrete like flaws, cracks, concrete cover, rebar spacing, etc.

In non-destructive test, the concrete strength is assessed and not measured. It is important to understand the physical relation between the given NDT and compressive strength. Engineers should evaluate the report and result before commencing the project.
